Midnight Road is David's second full-length solo album. It was recorded at Long Road Home Studio in Ompah, Ontario, Canada. Over a a total period of 3 weeks in the Summer and Fall of 2017, David and his grandfather Dave Young recorded all 11 tracks.
Midnight Road shows a maturation in David's songwriting, singing, and instrumental ability compared to his earlier work: the album includes his first use of lap steel guitar and accordion, for example.
Midnight Road explores a variety of lyrical subjects including driving; unrequited love; death and the Afterlife; farmers; the cacophony of the media; and loneliness.
